Nothing was going as we expected, but we didn’t let that stop us! By never losing sight of our goals, our story is proof that with determination and hard work, anyone can achieve their dreams.
There were so many moving parts that needed to fall perfectly into place if we were going to make this move happen. Our dream was to buy a 40-acre farm so our family would experience an entirely new lifestyle outside the city. As Jason and I went over the details, we couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed by it all. How was this going to work for us?
As a REALTOR® for over 20 years and Jason for over 16 years, we know our way around a transaction. In this case, we had a lot of walls to break down before this dream could become a reality. With experience helping countless clients in our community and investing in properties of our own, we know every transaction has its set of unique challenges. This turned into one of the greatest learning experiences of our lives.
For many years, I was a single mother. I cared for my son, Landon, while working as a solo agent, building my client base and earning enough to provide for us. But as much as I loved my work, I always felt like I was missing precious time with my son, who was growing up too fast. There wasn’t enough time in the day to do it all.
It was incredibly hard to miss his school play or soccer game because of a last-minute showing. Even though I wanted more balance, it just wasn’t an option on my own. When I met Jason, he worked at the same company as me. We started dating, fell in love and married in 2011, and from there, we had our daughter, Leah, and son, Levi.
Jason was a major factor in helping me find more balance with my time. Together, we formed a real estate team and shifted from me working non-stop as a solo agent to having agents to help with the business. Getting a coach ended up being one of the best choices we could have made. They told us to set time aside for our family first, then plan time for our business. It was a mindset shift to realize we were in control of our lives and could still offer the same high-quality service while also having time with our family.
With better management of our time, Jason and I expanded our focus to include real estate investments. We acquired rental properties and started an Airbnb business. Our goal was to build an investment portfolio and, in turn, help our clients do the same. It was hard work, but the satisfaction of seeing our clients succeed and our business grow was worth it.
When every small detail was finally together, we were able to purchase our farm in 2022. It was a huge accomplishment for us. Our kids get to experience an entirely different way of life, including taking care of our chickens, ducks, and alpacas. There is an endless supply of projects to do around the property, but we are excited to take this new challenge on.
This experience has given us even more understanding and empathy toward our clients. We are better REALTORS® because we experienced firsthand what was at stake. It wasn’t just a house or piece of land; it was where we envisioned our family making memories and starting a new adventure.
We had moments where we considered letting this dream go and finding another, but in the end, we wanted this bad enough to fight for it. When we help families, we keep our own experience in mind and do everything in our power to make their dreams a reality too.
